 "Rhythmically Brilliant" 

Mario Godoy (b.1988 Riverside, CA) is a Mexican-American composer, saxophonist, sound designer, and music educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. 
 
His compositional style is characterized by the coalescing of rhythm, color, and layered elements. His works span the range of purely acoustic to entirely electric and he often intermixes these sonic palettes when writing concert pieces, video game music, music for films, and fixed-media works alike. 

Mario has received commissions from ensembles and organizations such as Friction Quartet, Nomad Session, Mobius Trio, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, Cal State Humboldt University, and Musaics of the Bay. He has been awarded grant, festival, and workshop opportunities from InterMusic SF, Connecticut Summerfest, and Del Sol String Quartet. His work is featured on Mobius Trio’s sophomore album Bon Voyage, Sputterbox trio’s 2020 debut album Sputter Shrinks the Box, two new music compilation albums, and his reed quintet create. process. is published in the Akropolis Collection by Akropolis Reed Quintet. He has given composition masterclasses and guest lectures at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of the Pacific, and Cal State Humboldt. Currently, he is developing a series of multimedia chamber works, along with a solo album of pieces for saxophone and electronics.

As a media composer and sound designer, he has worked extensively with independent game company Flint Games on several titles, including their most popular release, Blitzkeep Unleashed. He is currently developing music and sound design for Taelmoor, an innovative scan-and-play dungeon-crawler board game by indie game company Delve Bros. He composed the music and created the sound design for Good Squire, which was voted into the top 5% of games developed at the 2020 Ludum Dare game jam. Mario also designed the music and sound for an audio-based augmented reality game that was presented by Playcrafting and Bose. In 2022, he partnered with Bay Area filmmaker Dominic Mercurio to provide sound design, foley, dialogue editing, and mixing for his short film He Won’t Belong, which will premiere in 2023.

Mario is also an active music educator. He is on faculty at Las Positas College in Livermore, CA, where he teaches Scoring for Film and Media and applied lessons in music composition. He is also the music program director at Berkeley’s Maybeck High School, where he has grown the program from a single music appreciation course into a thriving program that offers various courses in music history, audio production, podcasting, and performance in the Maybeck band. In addition, he maintains a small studio of private students in Oakland, CA, and has taught through the John Adams Young Composers Program at the Crowden Music Center in Berkeley, CA.

As a performer, Mario performs as a saxophonist across the gamut of musical genres including symphonic and chamber music, jazz, and pop. He is also an enthusiast of synthesizers and electronic music and performs live using saxophones, modular synths, and live processing. His most notable performance role was as the saxophonist and electronics player for experimental pop band, Makeunder.

He holds a Master of Music degree in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied under David Garner and Dan Becker. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance from the University of Redlands where he studied saxophone with Eddie Smith, composition with Anthony Suter and Chung-Shih Hoh, and electronic music with Andrew Glendening. At the 2018 Connecticut Summerfest, he had the opportunity to work with composers Kenneth Fuchs, Paula Matthusen, Larry Alan Smith, and Dan Román.
